 Operating Privileges:

The fellow will participate in the facial plastic and reconstructive surgery cases at Guelph Surgical Suites, Guelph Facial Plastics, and Guelph General Hospital. Involvement in the case will be based on the level of experience and technical skill of the fellow. The goal of the program is to have the fellows able to perform the cases without assistance by the end of the fellowship year. The operative experience is therefore graded through the year. This is not an observational fellowship.

The fellow will be assigned a weekly benign skin lesion clinic where they will fun citon as the primary surgeon. In a graduated approach the fellow will be assigned skin cancer excisions, local flaps, functional septorhinoplasty, and facial trauma cases.

In the second half of the year the fellow will be allowed to establish his/her own clinic which will allow the development of patient interaction and management skills. The cases seen in this clinic will be done under faculty supervision but will be primarily considered the fellow’s patients. This will include cosmetic surgery cases.

The fellow will take call responsibilities at Guelph General Hospital and will act as the primary surgeon for any operative cases within their skill set with support by Dr. Brace.

Teaching Responsibilities:

The fellow will share responsibility in supervising and teaching McMaster Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery  PGY2 and PGY4 residents that rotate with Dr. Brace for their respective community and facial plastic surgery blocks.

Research:

The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in established research projects or to develop their own with support from Dr. Brace. The University of Guelph is home to a human anatomy lab with the opportunity to perform cadaveric studies with support from the Human Anatomy Graduate and Undergraduate students.

Objectives

  1. To provide Royal College Fellows and American Board eligible surgeons advanced training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
  2. To enhance the fellow's exposure to research through the provision of clinical material for retrospective and prospective studies. To supervise the preparation of research papers for presentation at national and international meetings. To encourage and aid presentations at hospital and departmental rounds.
  3. To stimulate the fellow's interest and provide experience in teaching medical students, residents and peers.
  4. To provide the fellow insight and experience in the management of a contemporary medical office and enhance his/her professional management skills.
  5. To provide the fellow and his/her family exposure to a different professional, social and cultural milieu and enhance his/her professional and personal growth.

Duration of Fellowship

The length of the fellowship is 12 months, beginning July 1st of each year.

Required Prior Residency Training

The candidate must have completed a recognized residency program in Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery or Plastic Surgery.

Annual Stipend/Salary

At the University of Toronto, compensation for clinical fellows is equal to or greater than the salary of a PGY3 resident. Malpractice insurance is arranged through the Canadian Medical Protective Association in Ottawa by the fellow on the basis of an educational license. This should be effected prior to arrival. This cost is covered by the Fellowship Director. Health insurance for the fellow is obtainable through the university and is paid by the Fellowship Director. Comprehensive, relatively low cost health insurance is available for dependents.

Benefits:

  • Stipend: $65,000 a year with the opportunity moonlight on call
  • Other: Full use of photography suite, Vectra imaging software, access to QMP video library and Dr. Brace’s facial plastic and reconstructive surgery library, access to AAFPRS Compendium of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery papers to prepare for and challenge the ABFPRS board exam
  • Time off: Christmas and to attend conferences (AAFPRS and CSO)

On Call Responsibilities

The fellow will take first call for Dr. Brace every Monday and one weekend a month (Fri-Sun) for a total of 7 calls a month. There is opportunity for the fellow to moonlight and take extra call.

In addition, the fellow will take call for cosmetic surgery patients and cover the practice when Dr. Brace is away (approximately 6 weeks of the year)

Case Mix

Case Load:

The average case distribution through the year includes:

  • 100-200 malignant skin lesions with local flap reconstruction
  • 90-130 functional and cosmetic rhinoplasties
  • 35-50 face, neck and brow lift surgeries
  • 90-100 periorbital aesthetic surgeries (upper and lower blepharoplasties)
  • 80-100 benign skin surgery (including scar revisions)
  • 50-70 CO2 laser resurfacing cases
  •  15-25 otoplasties/ear reshaping
  • 30-50 head and neck surgery cases (thyroid, parathyroid, salivary gland, tracheostomy, facial nerve)
  • 5-15 maxillofacial trauma cases
  • 100-200 injectable cases (filler, neurotoxin)

For the last 9 years the average number of surgeries performed by Dr. Brace has consistently been ~700 per year
