Research

Message from the Vice-Chair, Research

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery aligns with the Faculty of Medicine mission to seek excellence in research. Our specialty covers a very wide spectrum of clinical areas, and in each of these we contribute new knowledge, and often ground-breaking discoveries. Our core department consists of innovative sub-specialty clinicians, surgeon-scientists, basic-scientists and, importantly, numerous trainees (residents, graduate students and fellows) who contribute to the research mission.

In the department, clinically related research is carried out by most of our staff, often in association with other health-care professionals and/or basic scientists. Our full-time scientists interact extensively with our clinicians in translational studies, and are also involved in basic aspects of science (“discovery science”) relating to Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.

Our department is the largest in Canada, and our research productivity in peer-reviewed publications and other knowledge translation is world class. Our research network across the five main teaching hospitals consists of sixteen laboratories or research teams. Teams with common research interest are collaborative, and each group fosters it own links within the host institution and with researchers worldwide.

Trainees are encouraged to make research integral in their career development. New staff recruits and all faculty are expected to be academic clinicians with research interests. We strive to be world leaders in our fields, and in many areas we already are.

Sincerely,

Robert V. Harrison, PhD, DSc
