Laryngology Fellowship

Clinical Component: 

The Laryngology Fellowship at Unity Health Toronto - At. Michael's Hospital is a one-year program offering advanced training in the management of voice, airway, and swallowing disorders. Fellows will primarily work with the Fellowship Director, Dr. R. Jun Lin, while also having opportunities to work with other members in the Division of Laryngology at the University of Toronto, including community-based Laryngologists and Pediatric Laryngologists. 

Our interdisciplinary practice model emphasizes collaboration with Speech-Language Pathologists, offering fellows experience in behavioral therapy for laryngeal disorders alongside the development of expertise in both endoscopic and open surgical approaches. Fellows will participate in a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, both in the clinic and the operating room, with a strong focus on advanced laryngological surgical skills. 

On average, fellows will encounter about 2,000 Laryngology patients annually, perform 250 operative cases in the OR, and complete over 400 in-office procedures. A typical week includes one OR day, one in-office procedure day, and two to three clinic days, including a dedicated half-day Botox clinic. A specialized laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) clinic, conducted in collaboration with a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation EMG expert, occurs every other month. Graduated autonomy is tailored to each fellow, with early initiation of hands-on experience. 

Research Component: 

Fellows are expected to engage in clinical research, with the goal of completing at least one project per year. Presentation of research findings at a national or international Otolaryngology conference is strongly encouraged. 

Education Component: 

Fellows play an active role in the teaching of residents and medical students, contributing to both clinical training and the development of operative skills.

All clinical fellows require licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), the body which regulates the practice of medicine in Ontario. A key requirement for the licensure of clinical fellows by the CPSO is that the candidate must be recognized as a medical specialist in the jurisdiction where the candidate has been practicing medicine prior to the clinical fellowship.

At the University of Toronto, compensation for clinical fellows is equal to or greater than the salary of a PGY3 resident. 

International Fellows:

Department stipend for Year One (Research). Candidates are expected to have salary support from their own institution or funding agencies through grants or scholarship reaching a level set by the University of Toronto. 

Fellows will be expected to present a research project at an approved conference where the expenses will be reimbursed for the meeting and travel costs.

On-call Commitment: as directed by mentor.

A wide breadth of laryngeal conditions affecting voice, breathing, or swallowing will be encountered.

Fellow can spend time with SLP colleagues and laryngologists who practice in the community. 

Fellows are expected to present a research paper at the Annual Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery Percy Ireland Research Day and at a National/International Conference. 

Fellows are encouraged to discuss any difficulties, conflicts or grievances with the fellowship director as they arise and at introductory, mid-rotation, and final meetings.
